Energy & Water Reporting & Benchmarking

What is Energy & Water Reporting & Benchmarking (EWRB)?

In February 2017, the Ontario government introduced the Reporting of Energy Consumption and Water Use Regulation 506/18.  This regulation requires owners of commercial, multi-unit residential, institutional or industrial buildings over 50,000 square feet in size to report their property’s water and energy usage on an annual basis.  By tracking usage, the goal of this initiative is to allow comparison of energy and water usage of similar buildings, which helps building owners identify opportunities and save money.

Which Buildings are Required to Report?

Under the Reporting of Energy Consumption and Water Use regulation, large building owners need to report their building’s energy and water use once a year to the Ministry of Energy, Northern Development and Mines (ENDM) on:

  • July 1, 2019 for buildings 100,000 square feet and larger
  • July 1, 2020 for buildings 50,000 square feet and larger
